In most cases, the photographer has an obligation to gush a bit over the subjects in the photography they post. Since we typically work with people we know as much as we can afford, it’s often genuine. In this case, I have to say it’s sincere to the core. I love working with Tavia, Travis and their beautiful girls. More than a couple of times, Tavia’s work has been such a strong element in my photography that it nearly shadows my composition with creative technique. Additionally, Travis is always just a great sport about helping …
It’s hard to believe there was I time when you could get me to photograph anything, anytime, anywhere… so long as it was black and white. Like the early Model T, my photography was for the black and white film lover. Geared up with my father’s AE-1 and rolls and rolls of fresh out the cooler Ilford Delta 400 film. Loved it. The grain, the cool temperature, the response to ambient light, and the convenience of less-than-finicky developing made it my mainstay.
The other day I was in a meeting and a colleague showed me some …
Shelley and I have a monsterous amount of work together on either side of the camera. I make things look interesting, and she makes interesting into amazing. From our contrasty and rich location shoots to the intimates in the home studio with filtered natural light, the feeling is simply amazing. On an earlier post on the Tumblr site, I gave a little “sneak peak” into this impromptu shoot. Talk about deadline, I had an hour to pack gear, arrive and set up. Meeting with Shelley in the hotel, we had to shake the hands of the …
If there were ever a time that I would always say simple is more, it’s got to be working with the female form. When in studio, I (and many photographers with whom I work) start to go a little gadget crazy. We want a great exposure that outlines the form so we use side lighting schemes that are the product of creativity and down-time in the studio with lights at our disposal. Then, of course, you need to actually SEE the person you are photographing. Using side/hatchet/split lighting on a female? Sure, go ahead, and …
South Congress is always a safe bet for fun in front of the lens. With near perfect Austin weather, great design and textures, shoppers and artists milling about their lazy day in the sun. Each time I return with a couple, I find new ways to utilize the scenery, signs, and architecture of the shopper-friendly neighborhood. Oh, and btw, I am sorry that the neighborhood parking is getting out of control. I would recommend to anyone thinking about using this venue to carpool into the area and try to park by …
This isn’t the first time I have been MORE than happy to step in to assist another great photographer. This time it was a fall wedding with Jen Brown Imaging. I can’t tell you enough just how much fun assisting at a wedding is for me. Removing myself from the role of organizer, I enjoy spending my time getting details of the wedding, a fresh angle of the ceremony, and filling up on reception fun! I get to help a fantastic (and brilliant) friend and former class mate, Jen Brown with …
Anyone who has worked with me, a bride, an art director, a model, has likely heard me sing the praises of Anna Alvarez, my stylist. Ready in the clutch and amazing with hair, no matter how crazy we go, this lady is amazing. When she told me about migrating once again into the north Austin for work, I rolled my eyes and wondered why… until meeting Laura and the other amazing ladies and gentlemen at the great looking Salon at the Domain. An absolute gem nestled next to Dillard’s and Maggiano’s …

One of the things that continues to push creativity to the brim here in the city of the violet crown is the stiff competition for… well, everything. I can never forget that one client that I just could NOT make happy and, thusly, dissolved our agreement. She said, “I can stand on any corner in Austin and shout that I need a photographer and ten people will respond.” She wasn’t upset at all when she said this, but I still was immediately uncomfortable and enlightened. We are forever in competition with thousands of photographers, stylists, …
Years ago, my coworker and I were taking a smoke break together when we started talking about the photography projects I was working on part time, outside of my job at Satellite Country. Miranda had mentioned in passing that one day she would hire me to photograph her wedding. Fast forward almost a half decade and there I was at Jillian’s venue once more for a hot “Spring” wedding in Central Texas, Miranda and Austin at last together with their family and friends to celebrate a lovely union. As expected, the wedding was a beautifully …
I have really been blessed to have such an amazing support network these past few years as I returned to college. Again. And hated it. Again. But this time I took advantage of my time and ability and really applied everything I could afford at that point in my life. From it I have harvested internships, jobs, gigs, contacts, connections, workflows, and yes, even clients. While getting my dental scale cleaning thingy that hurts all to bloody hell done for zero dollars (that’s 450 pesos) by my super duper amazing hygienist Rachel’s class. By the …
What a blessing to have such an amazing team come together for a shoot so simple in design as this staged bridal portraiture to create such elegance in imaging. Lyz was a true talent. Notice here I am not calling her a model. I have worked with more than enough models to grant me right to some typical generalizations now. She listened to direction, created the movement and energy I asked for, and then ran with it like no one’s business. As my lighting schemes developed through the shoot, she fed from my direction to …
I was going to wait a little while longer to let the first blog featuring Lyz of Austin and Cypress Vanguard Design House and amenities fade a bit into the obscure, but these images are burning a hole in the hard drive. I was so pleased to have the assistance and talent along for the proverbial ride that we created an additional set featuring a piece from Megan’s collection at her boutique. The boutique is undergoing quite the transformation! All clues point to vast improvements in the energy, the look and definitely the people! While the new designers …
The Salon at the Domain is a new boutique salon located in the Domain’s “Phase II.” As the Domain expands, so does the diversity of the shops and restaurants. On the southern side of the complex, the salon is a beautifully designed space where post-mod high-key meets fresh updates on traditional patterns and textures. However, what you will notice when you visit this salon is not the decor and design, but the gorgeous ladies and their beaming smiles who will take your hairstyle, color, and make-up to another echelon. Having so much budding talent in …
Emily Fennell. This cutie has been a fan of my photography since before it was worth a dang. It’s no wonder I love photographing Emily because of her devish grin and angelic eyes, her constant tan and fun personality. From her wedding to fun poolside shots, we have some great times in our friendship’s history to say the least. It was an honor to take a little time before my vacation officially began to have her in the studio for some maternity photos. Her first baby, Maiya is on her way soon, which really put …
While waiting on her mother to finish preparing for her bridal portraiture, the never-camera-shy Sabrina helped me test my lighting. Fresh from dance class, I encouraged her to show off her skills from her hard work at the dance studio. While culling through images from the vault to make MORE room for video and new images, I often come across little unplanned or candid photos from sessions that I find interesting in one way or another. A beautiful and energetic kid, Sabrina was always ready to offer a hand …
When it comes to photography, some genres are so challenging that many photographers hesitate to go outside the comforts of the standard compositions and lighting schemes. Newborn photography is a great genre that I have recently photographed a bit more and more as I get older (and all my friends start getting pregnant!) I have had the pleasure of trying out ideas I have had for this specific field of photography. Miranda (Randi) is a part of the great team at Salon at the Domain, where we met when I took a bunch of pictures …
I love it when my work is easy. Who doesn’t? So when I get to photograph a beautiful stylist with the stunning look and vast talent of Sarah, I get to streamline my workflow to the parts I really love. Light. Fun. Camera. That’s it! Sarah is a stylist who makes innovative remain elegant. It was a blast to work with her again. Again? Yup. We met at Miranda and Austin’s awesome wedding at Cedar Creek where she transformed Miranda and company from natural beauties to styled, classy vixens for the special day. Enjoy the …
It’s no secret that I have my preferred vendors for venues, printing, catering, beauty, etc. Mostly, these peeps are my buddies and pals from around the Central Texas Area. These are great folks to know. Getting to know them through work and projects establishes a great respect and admiration for work ethic and style. One of my all-time favorite vendors are Jillian and Chris of Cedar Bend Events. The shin-digs that these two put together are always a sum much greater than all the parts. I see amazing work and beauty at their quaint and …
A great morning with the elfishly cute Emily Nicole in the studio this weekend brought about laughs, Juan In A Million breakfast tacos, and OJ. The beverage, not the amazingly tough running back for the Bills. Maiya “Mai-Tai” Fennell is promising to be as much of a character as her mom.
None the less, this is a cutie if I ever saw one. With a ton of expression already, I can’t wait to see what she blossoms into in the sessions to come. You can contact me today to see about booking your Family Photography Program …
When it rains it pours, huh? As one former wedding client begins her maternity photography with JWG PHOTOGRAPHY, another, and another show up… now, family calls on us as well! Emily Fennell fantastic cousin Christen is just about ready to pop as we take some studio photos of the soon-to-be-Sophie belly and push the envelope from the traditional composition. These are some of the highlights from that great shoot. Thanks so much to Christen for trusting my vision and allowing me to get something that she’d never get from anyone else. Also, big thanks to …
We had been meaning to shoot at the Swan Dive once again for a more… publishable shoot for some time now. Shortly after the release of Austin Monthly’s great spread by Andrew Chan at that venue, we decided to push it back and rethink lighting just a bit. I decided to go with a much higher key composition than I first thought so that these would stand out. With me is the beautiful and talented Anna Alvarez who is at the Salon at the Domain (book. her. now.) for hairstyle and a new collaboration with …
Holy JEEZ I love it when I get to work with amazing people! For the much anticipated (and delayed) bridal shoot with Suzie Jurado, I was blessed to have my A-Team onboard to assist. Originally planned to be at the Lustre Pearl, this shoot was the brainchild of Suzie herself. When we first began planning this shoot, I had nearly begged Suzie to let me try and impress her with my camera. I former co-worker, Suzie was familiar with some of the high-quality-yet-standard-and-uniform youth sports portraiture for All American Photo, our short run as All …
No, I am not going to get into a diatribe about the John Waters films that helped formulate the early obsession with pop culture that drives so much of my work. Instead I am going to actually shut up for a change and just get into it! Here are the images from a quick session this week with Katelyn Duncan, a young model from San Marcos who seems to know half the people I know also, but we just crossed paths recently. And boy want an intersection!! Not only is she a joy to …
Emily and Maiya are as much energy to have around as if they were each hurricanes blowing in from the Bahamas. It’s no wonder we get some of the most fun-filled photos from this mommy-daughter duo. Cousin Christen made it to the studio for some maternity photography last fall and now has added her beautiful baby girl Sophie to the photo sessions. What’s great about knowing amazing people is that we get to share beautifully fun milestones together with the camera. This session at the Pedernales Studio Co-op was a wonderful effort of timing, feeding, …
With the return of rain in our Central Texas sky after the crippling draughts of 201o and 2011, Lake Travis has begun its return to picturesque landscapes and lovely, rich sunsets to on the west rim of Travis County just outside of Austin, Texas. Amazingly, event venues have survived through the record heat and now are lush with grass, dark green cedars, and glowing dusks as wonderful backdrops to classic weddings such as Jon and Michelle’s celebration of unity at the Hacienda del Lago in Volente. High on the ridge over looking the lake valley …
